We Spoke To Fords Gin Creator Simon Ford About How The Award-Winning Gin Was Created, His Favourite Other Gin, And More.
Though barely four years old, Fords Gin has been garnering a lot of attention since it launched in Sept 2012. Distilled in London at Thames Distillers, the gin is the result of a collaboration between 8th generation Master Distiller Charles Maxwell and Simon Ford of The 86 Co, and has won several awards including Best New Product at Spirited Awards 2013, Gold Medal winner at the San Francisco Spirits Competition, and scoring a 5+/5 on Difford's Guide.
The reason for all this attention is because of the gin's well-balanced, fresh, floral, and juniper-dominant (49.5%) mix of nine botanicals, which sees the traditional base of juniper & coriander seed balanced by citrus (bitter orange, lemon & grapefruit peel), florals (jasmine flower & orris) and spices (angelica & cassia). The botanicals are steeped for 15 hours before distillation in 500 litre stills dubbed Tom Thumb and Thumbelina.
We spoke to its co-creator Simon Ford about how the gin came to be, the best way to have one, and his thoughts on the gin industry as a whole.
